Choose a Reputable Online Poker Platform

First, you need to select a reliable and reputable online poker platform that offers live poker games. Make sure that the platform is licensed, secure and provides a user-friendly interface for a great and seamless gaming experience. It’s always good to research and read reviews to find one that suits your needs and preferences.

Create an Account and Make a Deposit

Once you’ve chosen a platform, sign up and create an account. You simply need to enter the details required and agree to the platform’s terms and conditions. Once this is done, you need to deposit money into your online poker account. Most sites offer a variety of payment options such as credit/debit cards, e-wallets, or bank transfers. Pick the one that is most convenient and secure for you.

Open the Live Poker Section

Once you have money in your account, open the live poker section of the platform. The live poker games are usually found in a separate section – and at the best sites, you will find a number of variations such as Texas Hold’em, Omaha, or Stud Poker.

Choose a Live Poker Game

Select the live poker game that you want to join. Remember, different tables could have varying minimum and maximum buy-ins, so make sure you choose a table that suits your bankroll. You should also consider factors such as table limits, number of players, and game format (cash game or tournament) when making your choice.

Familiarise Yourself with the Interface

It’s always good to take a few moments to familiarise yourself with the online poker platform’s interface. Before starting, make sure you understand the buttons, features, and options available to you during the game, such as placing bets, making decisions, and chatting with other players or the dealer.

Interact with the Live Dealer and Players

One of the best things about live online poker is that you can chat and interact with the live dealer and other players. Make sure you use the chat feature to get involved in conversations, ask questions, and enjoy the social aspect of the game!

Understand the Game Rules and Strategies

This is obviously essential… Make sure you have a solid understanding of the poker game you are playing including its rules, hand rankings, and basic strategies. Generally, live online poker games are played with the same rules as traditional in-person poker, so if you’re new to the game, it’s a good idea to study poker guides, read statistics, watch tutorials, or even join online poker forums.

Manage Your Bankroll

Effective bankroll management is vital to your long-term success in poker. You don’t want to run out of money after just having started. Set aside a specific amount of money for your poker bankroll and don’t play with more than you can afford to lose. Stick to your limits and adjust your bets based on how much money is left in your bankroll.

Practise Makes Perfect

Poker is a game of skill that requires you to keep practising, learning and improving. Study different poker strategies, read books, watch instructional videos, and analyse your gameplay to identify areas for improvement. Ultimately, poker is a game of both skill and chance, and winning outcomes are never guaranteed.

MONEYMAKER 20 YEARS LATER – Documentary Feature Review https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/moneymaker-20-years-later-documentary-feature-review/ Tue, 18 Jul 2023 01:36:26 +0000 https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/?p=59687 It has been 20 years since Chris Moneymaker won the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event. His win helped launch the first Poker Boom and vault PokerStars to become the world’s largest online poker site.

A couple days ago, Poker.org released Moneymaker 20 Years Later, a documentary that explores Moneymaker’s win in the WSOP Main Event and how that win changed his life. It is definitely worth a watch for any fan of Moneymaker or those interested in the history of the modern era of poker.

Moneymaker 20 years later

Beer, Sports Betting, Accounting, and Poker

The first thing that stuck out about this documentary was the style. It reminded me a lot of some of the poker documentaries that came out around the start of the Poker Boom. While this isn’t PokerGO-esque level production, if you want an honest look into the life of the WSOP’s most famous champion, this is the interview to watch.

Like many documentaries, this one started with Moneymaker talking about his childhood. The highlight of the opening segment, in this reviewer’s opinion, was Moneymaker speaking about his relationship with his Dad. From there, the documentary switched to Moneymaker’s college years.

We learned about how Moneymaker discovered beer and sports betting. He also talked about how he started a career in accounting despite being “too dumb” to work at some of the top accounting firms. He split his time between work and poker, quite literally, and that eventually led to his run in the WSOP Main Event.

Most of us know the story about Moneymaker’s run as ESPN presented it back in the day, but in this interview, we hear more of his story. We also learn about some of the “creative liberties” that ESPN took in presenting the 2003 WSOP Main Event. This part of the documentary was fun, honest, and gave a fresh look at the Moneymaker run.

What If… Moneymaker Was a Full Tilt Pro

Imagine a world where Chris Moneymaker was an investor in Full Tilt Poker. According to Moneymaker, that almost happened! One of the more revealing sections of the documentary detailed Moneymaker’s contracts with PokerStars.

He started out making $5,000 a month “to do nothing.” After a year, Isai Scheinberg decided to 5x his contract. Scheinberg’s generosity earned Moneymaker’s loyalty, which was soon tested. While Chris was renegotiating his contract with PokerStars, Howard Lederer offered Moneymaker the chance to invest in Full Tilt Poker.

Moneymaker declined the offer, which he initially felt was a -EV play. Ultimately, it proved to be one of his smartest moves. Of course, it does make one wonder what the poker world would have been like if Full Tilt Poker had Moneymaker’s services. Fortunately, we will never have to find out.

The Future With America’s Cardroom

The last few minutes of the documentary gave insight into how Moneymaker signed on with ACR Poker. He spoke about how Black Friday impacted his life, his ability to play on PokerStars, and his future in poker. At one point, he revealed that he was considering retirement from poker. (We all know just about how long poker retirements generally tend to last.)

While some may see this as a backdoor plug for the website, it is still an important part of Moneymaker’s story. Listening to Moneymaker talk, you get the impression that ACR Poker is on a similar trajectory as PokerStars back in 2003. The right amount of time was spent on this topic. It covered his transition to ACR Poker without making the documentary seem like an infomercial.

Moneymaker Documentary: A Fun Look In

Moneymaker 20 Years Later is an entertaining look into the life of poker’s most famous World Champion. The interview helped to paint a complete picture of the man behind the legend.

The best parts of the interview focused on Moneymaker’s mindset while going through the Main Event and the realities of being the first mainstream poker ambassador. Unless you lived through those years as a part of the poker community, it is hard to imagine what the early days of the Poker Boom were like. This documentary helps to paint a clearer picture of that time.

As far as critiques, because poker fans have gotten accustomed to A+ level production from the likes of PokerGO, my principal gripe was with production quality. I felt that there was a bit too much reliance on stock photos and music, plus the background music just seemed unnecessary and could have been eliminated.

With that said, overall this is still a feature worth watching, particularly for any Moneymaker fan or anyone wanting to learn more about the early days of the Poker Boom. You can watch the documentary for free below, courtesy of Poker.Org’s YouTube channel.

Understanding the Basics of Online Poker

Before diving into the more advanced aspects of online poker, it’s essential to grasp the basics. Online poker operates similarly to traditional poker, played with a standard 52-card deck, but from the comfort of your own home. Players bet on the strength of their card hand in multiple rounds of betting.

You will need to learn the various poker hand rankings, from the high-value ‘Royal Flush’ to a simple ‘High Card’. Additionally, online poker involves understanding the virtual interface, which includes features such as digital ‘buttons’ for betting, folding, and raising.

Importantly, online poker adds an extra layer of strategy, as you won’t be able to see your opponents physically, which affects how you interpret their moves. Whether you’re looking to play cash games or participate in tournaments, a solid foundation in these basics will significantly enhance your online poker experience.

Bankroll Management: The Key to Long-Term Success

One of the most overlooked aspects of online poker success is bankroll management. It’s the critical strategy that determines how you handle your funds allocated for poker. Successful bankroll management ensures that even when you hit a streak of bad luck, you can continue to play without exhausting your resources.

It involves setting specific rules about how much of your bankroll you’re willing to risk at any given time, which varies depending on whether you’re playing cash games or tournaments. Additionally, your playing style, skill level, and financial comfort zone also dictate these rules.

Remember, poker is a game of skill over the long run, but in the short term, variance can cause swings in your bankroll. By managing your bankroll effectively, you can weather these swings, keep your emotions in check, and remain in the game long enough to capitalize on your skills.

Casino Banking Methods

Traditional Payment Methods

Traditional payment methods remain a popular choice for online poker transactions due to their straightforward nature and wide acceptance across various platforms. They typically include credit and debit cards, wire transfers, and checks.

Credit and debit cards, such as Visa and MasterCard, offer immediate deposits, allowing players to start playing quickly. However, some banks may block gambling-related transactions, so it’s essential to check with your bank beforehand. Wire transfers are another secure way to deposit or withdraw larger amounts, although they can take a few days to process.

Checks, on the other hand, are a slower option but can be ideal for those who prefer paper trails for their transactions. While these traditional payment methods are tried and tested, always ensure you’re using them on reputable platforms to safeguard your financial information.

Credit and Debit Cards

Credit and debit cards are among the most widely used payment methods in online poker, recognized for their convenience, speed, and security. They provide an immediate way to deposit funds into your poker account, enabling you to start playing almost instantly. Major card providers such as Visa, MasterCard, and sometimes American Express are generally accepted by most online poker platforms.

Moreover, these methods also often allow for withdrawals, making them a versatile choice for players. However, it’s essential to bear in mind that some banks may prohibit gambling-related transactions on their cards. Therefore, it’s always advisable to check your bank’s policies first. As a safety measure, ensure that the online poker platform uses secure, encrypted connections for all transactions to protect your sensitive financial information.

Bank Transfers

Bank transfers, also known as wire transfers, are a traditional and reliable method of handling transactions with online poker platforms. This method involves transferring money directly from your bank account to the online casino’s account. While they might lack the immediacy of credit or debit card transactions, bank transfers are often preferred for large deposits and withdrawals due to their high security and increased limits.

Processing times can vary, generally taking a few business days, and may come with a small fee depending on your banking institution’s policies. It’s also crucial to check the online poker site’s policy on bank transfers, as some might only allow this method for withdrawals, not deposits. As with all banking methods, use these transfers on trusted, secure platforms to ensure your financial data remains safe.

digital wallets

E-wallets

E-wallets have become increasingly popular as a method for conducting transactions with online poker platforms due to their convenience, speed, and enhanced security features. E-wallets like PayPal, Neteller, and Skrill allow you to store money in an online account that can easily be used to deposit or withdraw funds from online poker sites.

These services offer instant transactions, allowing you to start playing immediately after depositing. They also add an extra layer of security as they do not require you to disclose your bank account or card details to the online poker site.

Additionally, e-wallets often come with user-friendly interfaces and mobile applications, making them an excellent choice for those who prefer to play poker on their smartphones or tablets. Always ensure your chosen e-wallet is accepted by your online poker site to ensure smooth transactions.

Legal Considerations for Online Poker in the US

Before you start with online poker in the US, it’s essential to understand the legal landscape to avoid any potential pitfalls. The legality of online poker can be complex, as it varies from state to state.

As of this publication, states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan, Delaware, and a couple others have legalized and regulated online poker. However, in other states, the legality may be ambiguous or outright banned. To ensure you are on the right side of the law, we recommend checking your state’s specific regulations or consulting with a legal expert before you start playing.

Additionally, federal laws such as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) of 2006 also influence online poker play, making it illegal for banks to process transactions related to illegal online gambling. However, this law does not explicitly make it illegal for individuals to play online poker. So, a solid understanding of the legal landscape will keep your online poker experience enjoyable and compliant.

Choosing a Reputable Online Poker Site

Selecting a reputable online poker site is a crucial step in your journey to becoming an online poker player. There are several factors to consider to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. First, consider the site’s licensing and regulation. A reputable online poker site should be licensed by a recognized authority, such as the Nevada Gaming Commission or the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. Second, check the site’s security measures.

Look for sites that use advanced encryption technologies to protect your personal and financial information. Third, consider the site’s game variety and the user interface’s quality. You’ll want a site that offers a wide range of poker games and has a user-friendly platform. Additionally, look for sites with positive player reviews and good customer service. Sites that are listed on the RTG casinos list USA are generally reliable options, as they use Real Time Gaming (RTG) software, known for its high-quality games and fair play.

Lastly, ensure the site offers methods for deposit and withdrawal that suit your needs. By taking these factors into account, you can find a trustworthy site that provides a great online poker experience.

RTG Casinos Where you can Only Play Poker Slots

While Real Time Gaming (RTG) is renowned for its diverse range of casino games, some players might be interested in platforms where they can focus solely on Poker Slots, a unique blend of poker and slot mechanics. These games can be a great way to enjoy poker-themed excitement without the need to delve deep into poker strategies.

RTG casinos that focus on Poker Slots offer various games, each with unique themes and bonus features. When choosing a casino, make sure it’s licensed and regulated for a safe and fair gaming experience. Review player feedback and consider the customer service quality the site offers. Also, take a look at the bonuses and promotions related to Poker Slots—these can provide additional value and fun to your gaming experience.

Remember, while these games don’t require a high level of poker skill, they still involve risk, and responsible gaming should always be your top priority. Finally, check if these casinos are included in the RTG casinos list USA, ensuring they cater to US players and comply with necessary regulations.

Navigating the Online Poker Interface

Navigating the online poker interface can seem a bit daunting at first, but with a little practice, you’ll be maneuvering it like a pro. Most online poker sites have similar layouts and user interfaces, designed to provide an intuitive and user-friendly experience. Typically, you’ll find a lobby where different game options are listed, including Texas Hold’em, Omaha, and other poker variants.

Each game will usually indicate the buy-in amount, number of players, and table stakes. Once you’ve chosen a game, clicking on it will take you to the virtual poker table. Here, you’ll see your own virtual chips, the pot in the middle, and cards when they’re dealt. Controls for betting, folding, and checking will be clearly marked, usually at the bottom of the screen.

You might also find features for customizing the look and feel of the table, taking notes on opponents, or accessing hand histories. Most online poker sites also have help or tutorial sections, so don’t hesitate to use those if you’re unsure about any aspect of the interface.

Basic Online Poker Strategies and Tips

Mastering online poker involves understanding basic strategies and applying them effectively in your games. First, always remember the golden rule of poker: play in position. Being the last to act gives you a significant advantage as you get to see what everyone else does before you make your move. Second, start with a tight range of hands. Beginners often fall into the trap of playing too many hands.

Stick with strong hands like high pairs or high suited connectors to give yourself the best chance. Third, understand and utilize poker odds. This will help you decide when to call, fold, or raise based on the potential return versus the risk. Fourth, observe your opponents and take notes. Understand their betting patterns, their tells, and their tendencies to make informed decisions.

Lastly, maintain a calm and disciplined demeanor. Emotions can cloud judgment, leading to costly mistakes. Online poker is a game of skill and strategy over the long term; the more you practice, the more you learn and improve. And always remember, play responsibly and within your limits.

Poker Continues in New Jersey Online Casinos for Another Five Years https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/poker-continues-in-new-jersey-online-casinos-for-another-five-years/ Thu, 06 Jul 2023 11:38:07 +0000 https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/?p=59519 New Jersey

Phil Murphy, Governor of New Jersey, has signed a bill to extend online gambling in the state through 2028. The bill was sponsored by Senators Vince Polistina and James Beach and is a middle-ground solution. The signing of the bill comes at the end of several weeks spent calling for extensions of between 2-10 years to the previous bill signed in 2013.

The new legislation is good news for poker players in the state who want to legally continue honing their skills and participating in tournaments. It also gives the state an opportunity to remain at the forefront of the evolving gambling industry in the US. After the bill was passed, Senator Polistina spoke positively about the effect the extension will have on the economy and job market in New Jersey.

Expansion of current legislation allows poker players to continue playing online in New Jersey

Poker fans in New Jersey have been legally allowed to play different formats of the game online since Governor Chris Christie signed legislation permitting Internet gambling in the state in 2013. The new extension allows people to participate in online gambling, including poker, until 2028.

Players can find regulated casinos by using resources such as this page that lists all nj online casinos, including poker-specific sites such as NJ Party Poker and US 888 Poker. Listed sites such as Golden Nugget Casino and Hard Rock Casino provide a wider gaming experience. New Jersey residents can enjoy using these sites for a further five years as a major benefit of the extension.

Casino industry in New Jersey also benefits from the new bill

Players are not the only ones to be excited by the benefits of the bill to extend Internet gambling. The casino industry in the state also welcomes the extension. It has the opportunity to build on May’s Gaming Revenue Results announced by the Division of Gaming Enforcement.

The overall Internet gaming win reported by casinos for May 2023 was $161.4 million, which represented a growth of 18.7% compared to the previous period. Year to date (YTD), the reported Internet casino win was $781.5 million, which represented a growth of 14.7% compared to the previous YTD period.

Looking specifically at online table games, including poker, there was a decrease in casino win when comparing May 2023 to May 2022, from $58,700,698 to $54,410,444. However, the YTD figure for May 2023 of $295,597,128 compared favorably with the YTD figure for May 2022 of $291,716,618. So, the overall outlook for online poker in the state is positive.

There is also a positive outlook for job creation and economic growth in New Jersey that are linked to online gambling. They will be impacted by growth in revenue from the industry and the expansion of its legality for a further five years.

Why has the extension period been reduced from the originally proposed 10 years?

Although the five-year extension to online gambling in New Jersey has been welcomed by players and the gambling sector, questions have been asked about why the original proposed 10-year extension did not happen. State politicians revised their original ten-year suggestion to two years without any explanation. The reason for the change remains unknown.

The proposed two-year extension was increased to five years as the result of pushback from the gaming industry. Many members of the industry remain unhappy about the number of years. For example, Mark Giannantonio, president of Resorts and the Casino Association of New Jersey, said that the original suggestion of a ten-year extension should have progressed. He believes that this would have been the best option for the casino industry and the state.

Given the signing of the recent bill, Mr. Giannantonio will have to be satisfied with five more guaranteed years of Internet gambling in New Jersey, as will poker fans who are certain to be able to continue enjoying online play until at least 2028.

Top 5 Reasons to Play Online Poker in 2023 https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/top-5-reasons-play-online-poker-2023/ Mon, 05 Jun 2023 20:05:00 +0000 https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/?p=59038 Online poker has evolved over the past couple of decades to become an attractive option for entertainment and learning for players of all skill levels.

In 2023, online poker sites have ramped-up their offerings and continue to host thousands of games simultaneously throughout the world, including in America where U.S. online slots are also becoming more popular.

Below is a list of our top 5 reasons to play online poker in 2023.

online poker screen

Online Poker Convenience

As long as you have a stable internet connection, online poker provides a highly convenient form of card playing that can be enjoyed from pretty much any venue or setting.

Want to play a quick game like a “Turbo” poker event from your mobile smart device? Many online poker sites have capable software that will enable you to Bet, Call, Fold, and Raise with a quick tap or swipe on your screen.

In 2023, it is now just as easy to play online poker games from your own phone as it was for old-school Microsoft Solitaire enthusiasts to play that game from their PC at the turn of the century.

Want to multi-table a few cash games from the comfort of your living room or home office? You can easily play numerous tables of online poker using your own personal computer or laptop.

Online poker is perfect for players who are on-the-go, and only have a few minutes or a couple of hours to dedicate to a pastime.

Large Online Poker Player Pools

Getting thousands of individuals to a retail card room is a feat that only a few major entities can consistently pull off, but online poker sites in 2023 literally have thousands of players online at any given time!

Are you looking to compete against a large player pool in a multi-table tournament that offers a relatively huge (compared to the buy-in) first place prize? You can try your luck at various poker tournaments online that will boast hundreds (if not thousands) of human players during both peak and non-peak times.

There are small buy-in tournaments with large player pools that pay out thousands of dollars to the eventual winner for a nominal entry fee of just a few dollars.

But that’s not all… large player pools at online poker sites make popular games such as “Fast-Fold” and “Lottery-Style” poker possible. Online poker players can zip in-and-out of a Fast-Fold cash game that may have hundreds of players within a single “stake” pool.

Online Poker Game Variety

This is where online poker truly shines compared to retail card rooms. Simply put, online poker sites in 2023 spread a massive amount of games, stakes, and formats that you won’t find at land-based establishments.

Want to play a $1/$2 Limit Seven Card Stud game? That’s really not a problem at some of the larger internet poker sites.

How about a few hands of Badugi at one table combined with an entry into a micro-stakes Razz poker tournament? It is absolutely possible for players to find an “alternative” game to play online without any hassle.

The bigger internet poker sites spread games such as Omaha Hold’em, Seven Card Stud, Five Card Draw, Razz, Badugi (and of course, Texas Hold’em) around the clock – at multiple cash game stakes and tournament buy-in levels.

Online Poker Games on a Budget

The low cost of playing online poker games compared to brick and mortar casinos can’t be overlooked! You’re NOT going to find penny cash games and tournaments at your favorite card room, but you WILL find them at all hours online.

Would you like to set aside $25 for a weekend of poker play without having to worry so much about the inevitable “risk of ruin” that comes with a retail poker excursion?

Popular online poker sites offer events with real money buy-ins as low as $0.01 that can take over an hour to complete. You’ll also find “Limit” poker games with blinds as low as $0.02/$0.04 and “No Limit” $0.01/$0.02 cash tables online that “cap” the max buy-in to $2.00.

There are even Freeroll poker events online that allow casual players to enter a tournament for free with a chance of winning at least a nominal amount of real money, which can then be wagered in the poker site’s micro-stakes games.

You’ll have to “sun-run” to make $100 last an entire weekend at live card room cash games (even if you DO happen upon a rare, nosebleed-rake table that will allow you to buy-in for such a small amount).

On the other hand, micro-stakes penny games at online poker sites can grant casual poker players a MUCH better chance at “staying in the game” with a very small poker bankroll.

Online Poker Educational Value

Many professional poker players who compete (and have a positive expectation) against highly skilled opponents in live high stakes games actually “cut their teeth” on lower stakes online poker ring tables and tournaments years ago.

The speed in which online poker games are dealt (compared to a live setting) will ensure that you see more hands per hour. And this will translate into a greater opportunity to “learn from experience.”

Believe it or not, it is quite possible for poker players to literally play MILLIONS of hands online in their careers. Online poker sites can perform (otherwise time-consuming) tasks such as posting blinds or antes, shuffling, and dealing cards instantly.

If you want to learn how to play poker and give yourself the best shot at seeing a LOT of poker hands, there is no substitute for online poker in 2023.

Online poker games offer an educational value to first-time players who can comfortably study their opponents’ play (as well as their own) in a convenient setting that doesn’t require any physical travel, lodging expenses, or annoying waiting lists.

There are also a number of poker software tools that players can use to review their own hand histories after a game has ended, which can amplify one’s potential to significantly shorten the proverbial “poker learning curve.”

Have fun at the online poker tables in 2023 and reap the advantages of playing the game we all love on the internet!

The Landscape of Poker Regulations: State Variations and Future Development https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/the-landscape-of-poker-regulations-state-variations-and-future-development/ Mon, 05 Jun 2023 11:59:44 +0000 https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/?p=59125 Poker, a popular card game that combines skill and strategy, has been subject to various regulations across different states in the United States. Understanding the regulatory landscape is crucial for both players and operators.

This article explores the state-by-state variations in poker regulations, highlights upcoming bills related to poker, and sheds light on reputable new casinos in the USA and their monitoring mechanisms.

USA map

State-by-State Poker Regulations:

Poker regulations in the United States vary significantly from one state to another. While some states have embraced the game and established a regulated framework, others maintain stricter prohibitions. Here are some notable examples:

  1. Nevada:

Nevada, home to Las Vegas, has a long-standing association with poker. It was the first state to legalize and regulate online poker in 2013. The Nevada Gaming Control Board oversees poker operations, ensuring compliance with licensing, security, and player protection standards. Players must be physically located within Nevada’s borders to participate in online poker.

  1. New Jersey

New Jersey is another state at the forefront of online poker regulation. It legalized online gambling, including poker, in 2013. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement oversees online poker operations, focusing on licensing, auditing, and player safety. New Jersey participates in interstate poker compacts, allowing shared liquidity with other states, thereby increasing the player pool.

  1. Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania joined the online poker landscape in 2019, following the passage of a comprehensive gambling expansion bill in 2017. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board regulates online poker, emphasizing player protection, fair gaming, and responsible gambling practices. The state offers a competitive market for operators, contributing to increased choices and improved player experiences.

Reputable New Casinos in the USA and Monitoring Mechanisms

As the online gambling industry expands, several new casinos in the USA have emerged. These sites offer poker and other casino games to users and many have great sign-up offers which drives engagement and increasing popularity further.

Thanks to many of the new regulations surrounding online gambling in the USA, it’s clear that more players are turning to online iGaming as opposed to in-person casinos. Of course, these casinos are subject to strict monitoring and oversight to ensure fairness and player protection.

While progress has been made, including discussions on interstate compacts, the path to poker regulation in California remains complex.

Michigan

Michigan legalized online gambling (source: https://www.michigansharp.com/legal/) , including poker, in 2019. However, the state has recently explored the possibility of joining interstate poker compacts. The Michigan Gaming Control Board is actively working on rules and regulations for shared liquidity, which could expand the player pool and create a more vibrant online poker market.

Controversy Clean-Up: ACR CEO Puts Bounty on Imsirovic Allegations https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/acr-ceo-imsirovic-online-poker-allegations/ Fri, 19 May 2023 11:32:54 +0000 https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/?p=58869 A controversy in the pokersphere can arise quickly. Someone may play a poker hand today that instantly becomes controversial. Or a situation can reemerge from the past, take on a new form or add a new component, and capture the attention of Poker Twitter and surrounding areas. Or a member of the poker community might make an eyebrow-raising wager that get the attention of sites like onlinebet.com.

Not all people have the time to follow drama unfold on Twitter. They often ask for CliffsNotes. “Can someone give me the basics of this situation?” I’m here to do that. And since (insert copyright legalese here) that name is taken, I’m naming this column something unbelievably original:

JensNotes

Catchy, no? If no, we can go with a more explanatory title of Controversy Clean-Up.

Ali Imsirovic versus Phil Nagy

People logging on to Twitter on Wednesday, May 17, or anytime thereafter, may see chatter about longtime high-stakes poker pro Ali Imsirovic allegedly using bots to cheat on Americas Cardroom (ACR) and its sister sites on the Winning Poker Network (WPN). Or they may have seen people applauding WPN CEO Phil Nagy for putting a $100K bounty on the proverbial table for anyone who can prove that Imsirovic is doing said cheating.

Let’s go back.

Origin Story: Ali Allegations

What had happened was…

In April 2022, high-stakes poker players were playing events on the island of Cyprus. There was a Super High Roller Bowl and Triton Super High Roller Series, all a part of the PokerGO Tour (PGT).

Ali Imsirovic had been riding high from big results for several years running. He was the first-ever PGT Player of the Year in 2021 and he was on his way to a repeat, already on top of the PGT POY leaderboard in Cyprus… until things began to quickly fall apart.

Alex Foxen took to Twitter to publicly accuse Imsirovic of cheating at the Super High Roller Bowl – on the livestream, no less. Foxen said that Imsirovic looked at table-neighbor Paul Phua’s hole cards, and the livestream recording appeared to back up that assertion. The next day, Imsirovic played more of the tournament but wearing sunglasses, a rarity at those games and for Imsirovic himself.

While most poker players were taken by surprise at the accusation, many high-stakes players were not. Players such as Justin Bonomo and Ryan Leng spoke up as well to corroborate Foxen’s overall allegations of Imsirovic’s unethical play. It snowballed from there.

  • Allegation: Imsirovic cheated in the 2022 Cyprus Super High Roller Bowl.
  • Allegation: Imsirovic was banned from GGPoker for multi-accounting and using RTA (real-time assistance), both methods of gaining an advantage in online poker and widely regarded as a form of cheating.
  • Allegation: Imsirovich displayed suspicious behavior in online poker MTTs in the form of chip-dumping to his horses (players he backs), and his horses sometimes played suspiciously as well.

As of this article’s publication, there has not been any proof. Not a single poker player has produced solid proof that Imsirovic undoubtedly cheated in online poker. Even the livestream appearing to show Imsirovic peeking at an opponent’s cards could not serve as clear-cut evidence.

Further, GGPoker would never confirm or deny any investigation into Imsirovic or if he had been banned. This is common for online poker rooms, as they rarely reveal any information related to cheating allegations.

Even so, poker tours began to prohibit Imsirovic from playing their events. He and another player – Jake Schindler – were allegedly turned away from registration in the middle of the 2022 European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte Carlo series in early May 2022.

While the WSOP in the summer of 2022 took no steps to prohibit Imsirovic from playing, the PokerGO Tour did institute a ban in September. The PGT suspended Imsirovic and Schindler indefinitely and ruled them ineligible for their Player of the Year race. Even with that, the statement provided no details or evidence.

Despite the lack of evidence, the word of the poker players appeared to corroborate what some tour operators or online poker site operators knew or believed to be true.

It should also be noted that Imsirovic has never made a public statement about any of the accusations.

More to the Story: Coaching and a Bounty

The word around most poker spaces was that Imsirovic had given up on most live poker tournaments for the indefinite future. He did not try to play in the inaugural WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas in December, and he has yet to reappear at any major live poker series. Poker Twitter would have reported it.

However, poker players “in the know” felt certain that Imsirovic has continued to play online. He has reportedly been banned from sites like GGPoker and PokerStars. Notably, he was also banned from the Winning Poker Network, including Americas Cardroom in 2019.

On May 17, Barry Carter happened upon Imsirovic’s Instagram account and snapped a photo of a message asking any guys (only guys, evidently) to email him if they’d be interested in poker coaching.

Poker pros like Matt Berkey responded to Twitter threads to relay long-standing rumors that Imsirovic and his stable of horses collude and use RTA systems on ACR regularly. Phil Galfond seemed to believe this as well, referring on Twitter to Imsirovic’s “current cheating methods.”

Enter WPN CEO Phil Nagy. He was checking Twitter from the high-stakes tables at the current Triton series in Cyprus and saw Galfond’s tweet. Seemingly without hesitation, Nagy offered up a $100K bounty for proof of the cheating.

The move garnered praise from around the poker community, even from those who would not ordinarily say anything positive about an offshore-based poker operator. Matt Berkey, Jesse Sylvia, Ryan Riess, Justin Bonomo, and Dan Zack were among those magnifying Nagy’s offer.

That’s the story so far.

Beyond the Headliner: A Deeper Look at the 4Poker Team and Their Approach to Online Poker https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/deep-look-4poker-team-approach-online-poker/ Thu, 04 May 2023 16:29:01 +0000 https://cardplayerlifestyle.com/?p=58611 Much has been said about the new online poker site, 4Poker. Well, on second thought, scratch that. Not too much has actually been said about the site within the poker media sphere or as part of water cooler talk on social media, and that’s kind of puzzling to me. Rather, much has indeed been said in recent months about the site’s founder, Bryn Kenney. Naturally, there is a lot to say about the longtime poker pro, and rumor has it that there’s even a documentary in the pipeline about him. But the online poker site that he founded, 4Poker, is much more than just a product for him to be the front man for.

As I noted in a recent op-ed, a very talented, experienced team of professionals in the online poker space have collaborated to produce a first-rate online poker offering, and that – for some reason – doesn’t seem to be generating as much buzz as it ought to be.

For a closer look at the online poker site itself, I invite you to check out our 4Poker room review. But that’s not what this particular op-ed is about. I wanted to know more about the people who’ve “made the site happen” and their approach to running an online poker site.

Who is 4poker

4Poker: Making a Name for Itself

The challenge of any new online poker site, especially in a crowded field that includes numerous household names and legacy operators, is to distinguish themselves and stand out from that aforementioned crowd. Pointedly, over the last few months, the team at 4Poker has produced a dozen top-quality videos that demonstrate what the site is about, how it will operate, and the unique selling points (USPs) that make it different than the other online poker sites out there. I believe those videos are quite instructive as to the team’s overall approach, and they go a long way towards demonstrating the extent to which 4Poker is about far more than “just” Bryn Kenney.

A Model of Openness and Transparency

The first video in the “Inside 4Poker series” features an interview with the company’s CEO, Heath Cram, as well as a shorter secondary chat with their Director of Marketing Tom Lenihan. At almost nine minutes long, that’s about a third of the total length of the 12-part video series. It’s also the most must-see of the lot.

The video series began being released six months ago and on camera they’re talking about how the company started its journey two years prior. So, while they’re a just-launched online poker room, their team has been working on creating 4Poker for 2.5 years now. More than half a dozen of the company’s key employees, from CEO on down to the Directors of Marketing, Legal Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Customer Experience, Payment Processing, and others feature in the interviews, which were conducted by veteran poker broadcaster Matthew Broughton.

4Poker’s Founding: Going Retro but with a Modern Twist

To bring a good idea to life, it takes enough people who believe in it enough to put their money where their mouths are. Kenney recruited “30-40 professional poker players” as the site’s initial investors. The team of poker industry professionals they recruited has “a combined over 150 years of experience” among them.

4Poker is based out of the Isle of Man, and — perhaps fittingly — the outfit is staffed by a number of ex-PokerStars employees. These are primarily folks who used to work at PokerStars way back in the days when it was a private company owned by the Scheinbergs; i.e., what veterans of our industry call and fondly remember as “the good old days.” Many of those folks took breaks from working in poker, and it would seem that to a degree “they got the band back together” to launch 4Poker.

Much like the 4Poker site has a classic look and feel, so does the team behind it; and they’re working towards propelling the site into prominence with today’s technology. Unlike the early days of Wild West online poker, the industry is now a mature one and there are plenty of excellent sites out there. Thus, the 4Poker team are seeking to distinguish themselves at first primarily by being the most generous with rakeback and deposit bonuses.

4Poker’s Overarching Promise: Players First, Always

It’s no secret that when it comes to online gambling on the whole, the money to be made (by a company) from offering online poker pales in comparison to what they could make from other verticals such as online casino and sports betting. It’s “only natural” then that, as the years have ticked by, more and more online poker sites have become part of a greater online gambling megabrand. The purity of a “poker first” focus and mentality has steadily been eroded, and that’s something I dearly miss from “back in the good old days.”

4Poker, as a standalone online poker site, is by definition different. Its sole focus is poker, and everyone working for the company plays poker and is genuinely passionate about the game. How lovely it will be to not incessantly be cross-sold to other gambling verticals!

The 4Poker team has the luxury and opportunity to “do things right” and truly develop a site that’s “by players and for players.” And that’s precisely what they’re promising to do in a number of key ways that set them apart as an extremely player-friendly site, including:

  • A commitment to never charging for making deposits or withdrawals, with ultra-quick transaction processing
  • Players will have a voice via the 4Poker 4Forum; this establishes a two-way communication channel where the company can directly respond to and cater to what the players want
  • They have a player advisory board acting as the unofficial ombudsman, ensuring that management will staying true to player values
  • Enhanced responsible gaming features, including offering self-imposed deposit limits, format exclusion, and self-exclusion periods. Players can also track their spending as they’ll have access to their own profit/loss data.
  • They’re launching their flagship 4Poker Series of tournaments with ambitious guarantees and full knowledge they’re likely to miss. The team realizes: if you build it, they will come — and in the meantime, “early adopters will have a sweat at some free money.”

Conclusion

Having watched the Inside 4Poker video series, I couldn’t help but be reminded of when PokerStars released their Inside PokerStars video series about eight years back. It represented the first time an online poker operator took us behind the scenes to give players a greater and fuller understanding of how they operate and their approach to poker.

Reviews of the Inside PokerStars video series were universally positive, and those videos served to win many hearts and minds among poker players. It’s a wonder that no other online poker operator ever produced a bespoke video series about their own brands.

Until now.

But perhaps most notably and admirably, 4Poker produced their Inside 4Poker series and shared it with the public before even launching! They’ve realized their main challenge that lies ahead, of trying to lure poker players in a mature market. They realize they need to stand out, be transparent, and be crystal clear about what their site will offer players, and the company’s modus operandi.

And the folks behind the scenes have clearly understood the recipe for success. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel. There’s already a formula for what will work. Should they stick to this formula and stay true to their stated principles, I have no doubt that legions of online poker players will find themselves competing at the 4Poker virtual felts in the not too distant future.
